About
Our History
Salmon Creek Community School was founded in 1970 by a group of Southern Humboldt parents concerned with their childrens’ education. These grassroots persist today since the school board can be made up of parents and teachers, and community volunteers. Control remains in the hands of the community; we are entirely privately funded, and while we follow the core content standards of the state, we do not perform standardized testing.

Our Philosophy
Salmon Creek is an independent private school. Our governing body is a school board, made up of current parents, teachers and community members. Educational Philosophy is a blend of Montessori, Waldorf, and each individual teacher’s world view.
Welcome to Salmon Creek School: “Independent Schools for Independent Minds!”
Miles from the nearest school bus stop, the rural, wood-heated classrooms nestled in a mountain meadow may resemble one-room schoolhouses of centuries past. However, the solar panels on the roof power the teacher’s laptop, and on cloudy days, a generator keeps the school connected to the 21st century.
Salmon Creek Community School is a private, nonprofit institution established in 1970 to meet the educational needs of children in our rural community. Throughout its history, the school has provided a creative, caring environment for learning, emphasizing the value of both the individual and the community. Together, teachers, parents, and community volunteers create a rich, challenging, and positive classroom experience for our students. Language arts, math, science, and social studies form the foundation of our academic program. Additionally, music, movement, and hands-on activities like carpentry and gardening help students build self-confidence while sharing their work with others. Small class sizes allow for highly individualized instruction and attention for each child.
SCCS is a community resource supported by parents, teachers, and community members who serve as board members and volunteers. Our funding comes from tuition, donations, and special fundraising events. To foster community involvement, we actively seek local experts to share their knowledge, provide meeting spaces for other community activities and organizations, and host fundraising events that promote awareness and participation. The extended Salmon Creek neighborhood is the lifeblood of our school, and the school serves as its heart. Join us in this special and unique educational journey.
